When you’re talking about LED screens, you probably heard the word ‘pixel pitch’ mentioned several times. Pixel pitch – or pixel size – refers to the distance between the LED pixels and it is expressed in millimeters. The pixel pitch combined with the size of the screen determines the resolution of an LED screen. The smaller the pixel pitch, the higher the resolution of the screen.
The best pixel pitch is determined based on the average viewing distance and the size of the LED screen. In addition to this, knowing in advance what the LED screen will be used for, also influences this decision. It’s good to carefully consider what you want to display and how much detail the content contains. For example, highly-detailed content requires a higher resolution and therefore a smaller pixel pitch. Or if the screen is outside, the effect of daylight must be taken into account.
SHORT VIEWING DISTANCE (top) & LONG VIEWING DISTANCE (bottom):
To give you an example, we highlighted the pixels in the pictures below. The first one has a pixel pitch of 4mm, the second of 6mm and the third of 8mm.
Once you know the dimensions and pixel pitch of the LED screen, you can calculate the resolution. Feel like joining in on some calculations?
The first screen is 4m² with dimensions of 156 cm H and 260 cm W.
With a pixel pitch of 10 mm SMD.
Height: 1.560 mm /10 = 156 pixels
Width: 2.600 mm / 10 = 260 pixels
Total resolution: 156 x 260 = 40.560 pixels
This screen has a rather low resolution and is therefore mainly suitable for texts, pictograms, logos and pictures.
The second screen is 4m² with dimensions of 156 cm H and 260 cm W.
With a pixel pitch of 6 mm SMD.
Height: 1.560 mm / 6 = 260 pixels H
Width: 2.600 mm / 6 = 433 pixels B
Total resolution: 260 x 433 = 112.666 pixels
This second LED screen has a rather high resolution and can be used for all applications including videos, live sports events and films.
For every situation and application there are different types of LED screens that can be used. Through the steps below you can already get a rough idea of which LED application is the right one for you. There are of course many other factors to consider and our LED experts are happy to assist and guide you in your choice.
Step 1: Where will you place the LED screen? Indoors or outdoors?
Step 2: Do you want to use the LED screen in multiple locations or in 1 fixed location?
Fixed LED screens on the facade or fixed LED totems.
Mobile LED screens in the form of a LED trailer or on a flower box.
Fixed LED screens on a structure in the showroom or (company) building.
Fixed LED screen behind windows or transparent LED screens.
Mobile LED screen in the form of a mobile construction or LED poster
If you opt for synchronous control, the LED screen is connected to an external video source and the screen will display the images that you send to it in real time. Your LED screen becomes a second monitor, so to speak. It’s comparable to HDMI from your computer, DVD player, video camera,…
With asynchronous control the screen is connected to a media player, in which you upload the content and the media player will then play the uploaded content in a loop. A combination of synchronous and asynchronous control is possible as well.
Brightness means light intensity. A screen with high brightness has a higher light intensity. High light intensity allows you to easily show images with a higher contrast, which are more visible and readable. High-contrast images are eye-catching and memorable to passers-by. In addition, thanks to a higher brightness, the content always remains clearly visible, even in strong sunlight or a brightly lit room, which is not the case with screens with lower brightness.
Given the wide variety of designs, constructions and dimensions, each project is custom-made. Prices vary greatly depending on the type of LED screen and the chosen pixel pitch. Purchasing an LED screen is an important and big decision, and at the same time it can be a qualitative and sustainable investment. That is why it is important to choose a LED specialist with ample knowledge and experience that you can trust. Because when you consider buying an LED screen, it is vital to consider wide variations in quality, the return of an LED screen increases with duration of use, so make sure that your LED screen is always well maintained.
